The Impact of a Relative’s Death Sentence or Execution on Children

Hosted by the International Coalition of Children with Incarcerated Parents (INCCIP), this series of online events examines issues related to children with incarcerated parents.

In this webinar, human rights researcher and children’s rights activist Hamed Farmand will host a discussion between mental health counselor and expert on this topic Susannah Sheffer and Wells of Hope founder Francis Ssuubi about the impact of a relative’s death sentence or execution on children.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Francis Ssuubi

Wells of Hope provides programs for prisoners and their families in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania with great attention to children with parents on death row. As Founder of Wells of Hope and Global Ambassador of INCCIP, Francis strengthens global relationships of organisations, institutions and individuals working on issues relating to these children.

Susannah Sheffer

Susannah Sheffer is a clinical mental health counselor and a writer and researcher focusing on the impact of the death penalty. As director of the Texas After Violence Project’s Access to Treatment Initiative, she designed the first training series dedicated to working in clinical settings with family members of individuals who have been sentenced to death or executed. She worked with the US National Child Traumatic Stress Network to create a resource for working with children of parents who have been sentenced to death or executed, and has been an invited expert on this topic in a range of national and international forums, including a United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights high level side event in 2016.

Hamed Farmand

Hamed Farmand is an Iranian-American children’s rights activist and founder of Children of Imprisoned Parents International (COIPI). He was born and raised in Iran and moved to the US in 2010. At six, Hamed’s life was profoundly impacted by the execution and incarceration of family members. He lost his uncle to execution, his mother was imprisoned for five years, during which period, he lost another uncle and his wife to the death penalty. Hamed authored a book in Farsi titled Missing Mum, which recounts his childhood. He is an INCCIP board member and member of the Global Prison Nursery Network.
